Vero Beach is divided by the Indian River Lagoon going onto the mainland on one side and the oceanfront barrier island on the other. A considerable amount of the wealth in Indian River County is enjoyed by the residents and the numerous second home owners living in upscale gated communities on the barrier island. Restrictive zoning laws by the City of Vero Beach prevent the development of high-rise condominiums, hotels and large commercial centers, so the barrier island maintains its quiet, tranquil residential atmosphere.
Highway A1A and portions of Ocean Road on the barrier island are characterized by upscale storefronts and eateries offering fare from hot coffee and croissants in the morning to a mouthwatering chateaubriand and the best Cabernet at night. High end retailers offer men’s, women’s and children’s clothing from causal to elegant and everything in between. There are jewelers, salons and spas, offices, banks and a number of golf courses on the barrier island.
School age children from homes on the barrier island are welcome to attend any of the public or private schools in Vero Beach.
